IBM Mainframe AI Strategy Update 2026
Description
This IDC Market Note examines IBM’s mainframe AI strategy and related announcements as they have matured since the June 2025 launch of the z17. These include the general availability of the Telum II processor and the Spyre PCIe-attached accelerator chip in October 2025 and the July 2026 introduction of new z17 single frame and rack mount configurations, along with LinuxONE Rockhopper 5 and LinuxONE 5 Express, as well as ongoing mainframe software updates. “For mainframe customers, the availability of robust mainframe AI capabilities, including form factors for edge and distributed data, signals that now is the time to build a road map that fully includes mainframe workloads and data as part of an enterprise’s overall AI infrastructure strategy,” says Mary Johnston Turner, Research Vice President, AI and Workloads, Enterprise Infrastructure at IDC.
